Three of the most annoying Grey’s Anatomy characters

As we wait for the upcoming season of Grey’s Anatomy, we take a look at three of the most annoying characters in the series’ history.

Grey’s Anatomy concluded its eighteenth season in May 2022. This is a milestone season, as Grey’s Anatomy is one of the longest-running medical drama television series and the show marked its four hundredth episode in the season.

However, the season was contentious as certain suggestions hinted at the possible end of Grey’s Anatomy.

While the matter is unconfirmed, fans can look forward to the nineteenth season of the medical drama series, with Ellen Pompeo’s return as Meredith Grey already confirmed. In the interim, we look back at some of the most annoying characters to have been on the show since its premiere on ABC in 2005.

Is This The End Of Grey’s Anatomy?

Grey’s Anatomy’s co-executive producer and the actress behind the title character, Ellen Pompeo, ruffled feathers when she suggested that she was ready for Grey’s Anatomy to come to an end in December 2021.

This sentiment, alongside the fact that in season 17 she was in coma for most of the season, and in season 18 she was contemplating moving to Minnesota had fans worried. But with all that still up in the air, a nineteenth season of the series has been confirmed for a fall 2022 release.

However, whether the upcoming season will be the last still remains unknown.

Three Of The Most Annoying Grey’s Anatomy Characters

Considering that Grey’s Anatomy has been one of ABC’s flagship series for over 18 years with a total of 401 episodes to date, multiple beloved and fan-favourite characters have come and gone, and sometimes returned to reprise their roles. However, there have also been characters that viewers could not wait to see leave or be killed off from the show.

Let us start with an honourable mention, Meredith Grey. All things considered, this is an unpopular opinion, but in context, Ellen Pompeo is more responsible for Meredith’s honourable mention.

In December 2021, Pompeo made headlines when she stated in an interview, “I’ve been trying to focus on convincing everybody that it should end. I feel like I’m the super naive one who keeps saying, ‘But what’s the story going to be, what story are we going to tell?’”

This contemplation was seemingly incorporated into the storyline as Meredith Grey toyed with the idea of moving to Minnesota in season 18, then deciding that she will. Pompeo ended the season as the only remaining doctor of the original cast members in the show.

Watching it as a viewer made Meredith Grey more annoying than her character already is. As such, we hope that in the coming season this narrative does not continue, and that the focus returns to Grey-Sloane’s residency program.

That being said, there are more annoying characters from the show.

1. April Kepner

April Kepner’s character is considered annoying primarily because fans of the show did not believe she would be a permanent a fixture on the series.

Her character is as complex and polarising as other main characters that have been on the show. However, Kepner has been considered annoying for being neurotic, high-strung, selfish and for her bad leadership like how the time she took over as Chief Resident resulted in a disastrous and a tear-filled series of episodes.

But the fact that she always looked like she was about to cry got to viewers the most.

2. Owen Hunt

Owen Hunt went from troubled ex-military doctor to season 18’s biggest, “Why did you do that?” character.

Beloved for being loyal, Owen has always been annoying when it came to his romantic involvements. But in the latest season, he seemed genuinely happy with Teddy, despite the ups and downs in their relationship.

Therefore, it came as a shock when the most loyal, law-abiding character, besides Bailey, went against everything fans thought he stood for to help Noah with his assisted suicide. By the end of season 18, many were more annoyed than relieved that Owen was safe from going to jail as his decision also caused his entire family to leave.

It will be bittersweet if Owen and Teddy do not return in season 19.

3. Returning characters during Meredith Grey’s coma

In season 17 of Grey’s Anatomy Meredith was in a coma for most of the season. This story device allowed the writers to bring back fan-favourite characters that could not have returned in any other way, as they had died in the world of the story.

Therefore, it was exciting for fans of the show to see the return of George O’Malley, Derek Shepherd, Lexie Grey, and Mark Sloan. But their return was flat and meaningless, as they added nothing to the storyline at the time. All their appearances served as distractions from when Meredith would either wake up from the coma or finally give in and go with Derek.

This resulted in two seasons of the show going back and forth on Meredith’s fate, keeping the viewers on the edge of their seats waiting to see if she would survive or die.
