on

Though Strange New Worlds is the prequel to Star Trek: The Original Series, there are a few details that you need to know to accurately understand the timeline.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds premiered in May 2022 on Paramount+.

Since its arrival, the series has already garnered rave reviews from fans and critics alike. Moreover, the series is touted as the best of the Star Trek series.

Since Strange New Worlds is regarded the prequel to Star Trek: The Original Series, it may be helpful to understand the timelines and where Strange New Worlds falls in the canon to enhance your viewing experience.

However, there are also discrepancies that are important to understand for avid fans of the entire universe.

Is Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Available On Netflix?

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was introduced with a stellar leading cast, going where no one has ever gone before, including Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike, Ethan Peck as Spock, Rebecca Romijn as Number One, and Celia Rose Gooding as Cadet Nyota Uhura.

The series was promoted as part of the franchise, and it was made available on the newly-established paid subscription video-on-demand platform Paramount+.

The series is exclusively available on Paramount+. A subscription to the video-on-demand platform either costs $9.99 per month, or you can save by subscribing to the annual plan of $99.99.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Timeline And Discrepancies

The premise of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is, “A prequel to Star Trek: The Original Series, the show will follow the crew of the USS Enterprise under Captain Christopher Pike.”

While it is true that the series is a prequel to Star TrekThe Original Series, the series is also technically a sequel to Star TrekDiscovery.

The timelines of each of the series align, and the characters and storylines have overlapped in the past.

By the end of Star Trek: Discovery season two’s epic events of The Cage that took place in the year 2254, it is already established that the year is 2258.

It was in this year that Captain Christopher Pike made his appearance on Discovery. Therefore, the Strange New Worlds sequel to Discovery happened six months after Pike showed up on Discovery and had another fit in Spacedock.

The Strange New Worlds prequel to The Original Series took place seven years before the events of the original. The reasoning behind this is that in The Original Series’ pilot, titled Where No Man Has Gone Before, we meet Kirk and Spock of the future in 2265.

The seven-year gap is as a result of the pre-established canon of the entire Star Trek universe which established that before the events of the original, Pike commanded another five-year mission before his promotion to Fleet Captain, and Kirk took the center seat.

But there are discrepancies in Strange New Worlds. However, this is not out of the ordinary for the series to wave away inconsistencies.

Discrepancies with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds character arcs

One of the first major discrepancies is how the story will complete their character arcs to coincide with the events of The Original Series.

Many questions have arisen, like “Is Spock married to T’Pring?” when in the original the news came as a surprise. Similarly, people wondered why Nurse Christine Chapel is not engaged to Dr Roger Korby yet, or why Sam Kirk does not have his wife and young child, when previously-established canons and timelines suggested that Jim’s brother should have all of this by now.

Strange New Worlds suggests a change in Pike’s future

Another big discrepancy is how Strange New Worlds has attempted to rewrite Pike’s future.

In Discovery, after experiencing the time crystals, Pike discovered that in 10 years from the events happening on the series, he would be physically incapacitated from being burnt by radiation.

However, Strange New Worlds suggested that this may not be the case, depending on the decisions he makes in the series.

This sentiment can be construed to suggest that if the series becomes popular, the story could change to create more seasons.

What Can I Expect To See On Strange New Worlds?

Since Strange New Worlds takes place seven years before The Original Series, there are technological advancements that have not taken place yet.

If you have watched the original, you may expect these advancements. But again, Star Trek has always dismissed inconsistencies.

But in this series, you can expect to see phasers, transporters, handheld communicators, shields, photon torpedoes, Vulcan mind melds, and neck pinches because of Spock’s inclusion.
