The ACDP’s Marie Sukers gave her rebuttal Budget Vote Speech by challenging the Department of Tourism to focus on the recovery of the sector, rather than spearheading transformation.

The African Christian Democratic Party’s (ACDP) Member of Parliament (MP), Marie Sukers took to Twitter on Tuesday, 18 May 2021, to share her rebuttal speech to the Tourism Budget Vote Speech. The speech was given by Tourism Minister, Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane for the 2021/ 2022 financial year. In her speech, it seems that the minister prioritised the transformation of the sector. The sector is still finding its feet again after being one of the hardest-hit by the hard lockdown regulations.

Rebutting Kubayi-Ngubane’s utterances, Sukers explained, “The ACDP notes with concern the department’s focus on transformation versus that of prioritizing the full recovery of the tourism sector. It is our contention that given the significant impact of the pandemic on this sector, and the subsequent drop in revenue generated towards the GDP of our country, the most critical need is to stabilize the sector in order to preserve jobs. We must re-focus our energy to bolster national support for domestic tourism and re-imagine this sector, with a focus on the priorities of skills development and training for young people.”

Moreover, Sukers claimed that the deficiency in the tourism sector existed long before the lockdown regulations and restrictions. Therefore, addressing the matters of mismanagement of funds and poor record keeping should be the priority.
